Looking UpIsaiah 54:4

The Boats Come In Anyway

This message is for A woman stacking crates on a harbor wall at the end of a fishing morning, who has spent thirty years apologizing for a weight that was never hers to answer for, needs to hear that guilt is not even the right word for what she is carrying.

The gulls know the timing better than the clock does. They start coming in off the water about a quarter of an hour before the first boat does, and they sit along the wall in a row like they have been paid to.

She has worked this end of the harbor for a long time. Crates come up, crates go on the stack, the stack goes on the trolley, and there is a rhythm to it that her hands know without her. The men coming off the boats say her name and she says theirs. Somebody always makes the same joke about the gulls. The water slaps the stone and the ropes creak and the whole morning smells of salt and diesel and cold fish, and it is, by any honest measure, a good place to be alive.

And every one of those crews walks past her and she keeps her eyes on the crates.

Not out of unfriendliness. She is not unfriendly and everybody there would tell you so. It is that when a person comes toward her, her chin goes down about two degrees, and the eyes go to their hands or the crate or the rope, and she has done it so long that she no longer experiences it as a choice. It is just what her face does when someone arrives.

Now. If that is you, I want to be very careful, and I want to say who I am speaking to before I say anything else. Today I am not speaking to the person carrying something they did. That is a different message on this site and it uses different words. Today I am speaking to the one whose weight belongs entirely to what somebody else did, a long way back, and who has never once been told so out loud.

I am not going to ask you what it was. Not here, not later, not at the end. I am not going to ask you to say it to anybody, ever. Nothing in this message wants the thing itself.

Guilt is not even the right word

Here is what I want to put down in front of you, plainly, because somebody should have said it three decades ago.

Guilt is a word about something a person did. It is a real word and it does real work, and it has a remedy, and the remedy is confession, and it is good news for anyone who needs it.

It has never once applied to you.

And yet you have been taking its medicine for thirty years. Examining yourself. Going back over the hour. Asking whether you should have known, or spoken, or moved, or noticed. Apologizing, in a hundred small ways, in rooms where nobody had asked you for an apology and nobody could have told you what for. Trying, honestly and exhaustingly, to be sorry enough for something that was never yours to be sorry for.

Nothing lifted, because nothing could. You were answering a charge that was never brought.

You are carrying a weight and you are not the reason it exists, and you were never on trial here. I am not offering you my sympathy. Scripture says the soul that sins is the one that bears its own iniquity, and that a person is not charged with what another person's hands did, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the strength of my sentence, who takes that off a page and puts it down into a chest that has been braced against it since before you were grown.

Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame.Isaiah 54:4

Read who that is spoken to. It is spoken to one who was acted upon. Not to a wrongdoer being pardoned; to somebody who had things done to them and had been carrying the look of it ever since, and God comes and speaks to the face first.

He does not open with an explanation. He does not open with a requirement. He opens with fear not, and then He says the thing twice, in two different ways, the way you say a thing to a person who will not believe it the first time. You shall not be ashamed. You shall not be put to shame.

You have His word on your own face, and you have it as a statement about you rather than as a task for you. That is what the written word says outright, and His Spirit is the one who makes an announcement land in a body that has spent decades disagreeing with it.

Nothing here is being asked of you

I want to name something about this site and about this message, because you have learned to read ahead for the catch.

There is no telling. You are not being asked to say the thing to a spouse, a friend, a leader, a group or a stranger. Not today and not as a later step and not as the mature version of this. A person who never tells anybody is a whole person and a whole reader, and your quiet is not hiding.

There is no readiness test either. Nothing in this hangs on you feeling different by the last line, and if the weight is exactly where it was when you started reading, that is my work still to do and it is not one thing about you.

You are safe in the room you are reading this in, and you have not been asked for one word. The word says God is near to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit, and it is His Spirit, not a disclosure, who does the nearing.

The breakthrough

So here is the small thing, and it is the whole thing, and it costs you nothing.

Lift your head. Once. On purpose. Today.

Not because you are ready. Not to prove anything to a single soul on that harbor wall. Faith is an open hand and never a fee, and if your hand is still closed then it is my job to keep at this until it opens, and not one thing about your failure.

And I will say this straight, because a page is not always the help a person needs. If what has been done to you is still happening, or if tonight feels frightening, then this message is not the right help and I will not pretend otherwise. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour and a real person answers. In the United Kingdom, 116 123. Anywhere else, your local emergency number or a national line, and if you do not know it, a search will find it in under a minute. You never have to describe anything to anybody to ask for help staying. One person who can actually act is worth more tonight than anything I can write.

You have a face that God spoke to before He spoke about anything else, and you were the first thing He addressed. That is what the written word does in Isaiah 54, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it off the page and onto a wall by the water where the gulls are.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the ground under your boots before a word of this is spoken. You are not producing a feeling. You are agreeing out loud with something God said about your face, and what today feels like, and next week, the outcome is His. The written word is what settled it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it.

  1. Harbor wall at first light, you are stone and salt and a place where I work. You are not a courtroom and you never were. The written word says I shall not be ashamed, and I am working this morning with my head up.
  2. Word sorry that I have said all my life, you are not mine to say and I set you down in the name of Jesus. There was never a charge here to answer. What was done was not mine, and it never wrote my name.
  3. Lord, You spoke to my face before You spoke about anything else. I am looking up at You this morning on a wall by the water. And You have not once flinched, in thirty years of me expecting You to.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
