Wrap time is eight seconds and it is on a screen in the corner counting down, and everybody on that floor has a private opinion about the eight seconds that they express by not expressing it.
Bank of desks. Headsets. The particular sound of forty people all being pleasant to somebody at once, which from the middle of the room is a sort of sea.
She is good at this. Genuinely. She has been doing it four years and she has a voice for it that is warm without being false, and there is a laminated thing on her monitor about escalation paths that she has not needed in about two years.
Call ends. Eight seconds.
And in those eight seconds a whole case gets built.
Not about the call. The call was fine, the call is always fine. About her. And it is fast, and it is orderly, and it has a structure: an opening, a piece of evidence, a conclusion. It is finished before the tone goes for the next one, and then she says good afternoon, you are through to me, how can I help.
Forty of those in a shift. Four years.
She would not call it a voice, if you asked her. She would say it is just what she thinks. That is the thing about a case built well: from the inside it reads as reasoning.
If you know the eight seconds, sit down here at the next desk. Today I am speaking to the one carrying a thing nobody knows, who took it to God properly and meant every word of it, and who has a case built about her in every gap in the day.
Read the two verses before the famous one
There is a line in 2 Corinthians that gets quoted at people constantly and almost always starting in the wrong place, and starting in the wrong place turns it into a burden.
The famous part goes: bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. Quoted like that, it is a job. Police your own head. Catch every thought. Fail at it, notice you have failed, add that to the case.
Now go back two verses and read what Paul actually sets up.
He says the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds. Not ours. Not our discipline, not our willpower, not our capacity to catch things. Mighty through God.
And then he tells you what is being pulled down.
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.2 Corinthians 10:5
The word behind imaginations is logismos. It is not daydreams. It is reasonings. Arguments. A calculation, a case, the kind of thing that is built out of a premise and some evidence and arrives at a conclusion.
Paul is not talking about idle thoughts. He is talking about a case being made.
You are up against an argument rather than a fact, and you were never being asked to police your own head with your own hands. I am not offering you a lighter reading. The written word puts the weapons in God's hands two verses earlier and names the target as reasoning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and gets it into eight seconds of wrap time.
A case that reads as reasoning is still a case
Here is the practical part, and it is the whole use of this.
You have never questioned the eight seconds because what happens in them feels like thinking. It has the shape of thinking. There is a premise and there is evidence and there is a conclusion, and it arrives in your own voice, using your own vocabulary, referencing things only you know.
But a case is not a fact. A case is a construction, and it can be built beautifully out of true materials and still be a construction, and the test of a case is not whether it hangs together. It is whether anybody with standing has entered it.
And you have been accepting judgments forty times a shift from a court that never sat.
You are being reasoned at by a case God is pulling down, and you were never the one holding the tools. Scripture puts the demolishing in God's power and not in your grip, and it is His Spirit, not eight seconds of better effort, who takes down a structure a person has been living inside for years.
So in the eight seconds today we are going to do one different thing, and it is not policing anything.
Take a piece of paper. Write down, in its own words, one sentence you habitually say about yourself. An ordinary one, the kind the case opens with.
Underneath it, write one sentence God says. Second person, from Scripture. You are not condemned. You are His workmanship. You are accepted in the Beloved. Any true one.
Then read the second one out loud, once.
That is all of it. You are not required to feel it, and you are not required to catch anything in any gap for the rest of the shift. If the case gets built again at eleven past four, that is not a failure, and none of the demolishing was ever yours to do.
And one thing plainly, because a page is not always the help a person needs. If what runs under this has gone past a heavy stretch into hours when being here at all feels like too much, tell one living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line: 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. You never have to tell anybody the thing itself in order to ask for help staying.
You are covered by weapons that are mighty through God, and you were never issued the job of pulling anything down yourself. That is what the written word settles two verses before the famous one, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it off a page and onto a bank of desks on an ordinary afternoon.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the ground under every word coming next. This is not a feeling being worked up. It is agreement out loud with something God is pulling down, and how the next shift goes, and the one after, the outcome is His. The written word is what settled it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it.
- Eight seconds of wrap time, you are a gap in a schedule and nothing else. You are not a courtroom and nothing is being heard in you. The written word says the weapons are mighty through God, and I am taking the next call with an empty eight seconds.
- Case that gets made in the gap, you are a construction and not a fact, and I refuse your findings in the name of Jesus. A case can be built beautifully and still be a building. Nobody with any standing has ever entered you.
- Lord, the weapons are Yours and the pulling down is Yours, and I was never handed the tools. I am reading Your sentence out loud in the stairwell tonight. And You have been taking it apart on every shift I thought I was losing.
