Rush hour, on purpose, because you have to learn it sometime and the instructor believes in doing the hard thing at lesson six rather than lesson twenty.
He is thirty-eight. He never learned at seventeen, for reasons, and he has done eleven lessons now and he is genuinely not bad. The instructor is a man in his sixties with a flask and an unshakeable calm, and the only thing he has said in the last ten minutes is next junction, second exit, in a voice you would use to tell somebody the time.
And the whole time, from the driver's seat, there is a commentary.
Out loud, some of it. Not all. Sorry. Sorry, that was late. I always do that. I did the same thing last week, did you notice, I do it every time. That was a mess. Sorry. And more of it silent, underneath, in a steadier and much worse voice.
The instructor does not agree with any of it and does not argue with any of it. He says lovely, now the roundabout. Once, near the top of a hill, he says that was a good gear change, that, and the man in the driving seat cannot hear it at all, in the way that a person genuinely cannot hear a sentence that does not fit the file.
Now. I want to say who I am speaking to, and I am going to be careful. Today I am speaking to the one whose weight belongs to what somebody else did, a long way back. I am not going to ask you what it was, not now and not later, and I will not ask you to tell one human being anything, ever. Nothing here wants the thing itself.
I want to talk about the commentary, and about where it got its valuation.
Read the order of the sentence
In my grandmother's house nobody was ever told they had earned their lunch. The tray came out because you were there. The worth came first and the food came second, and if you had tried to explain that you had done something to deserve it she would have looked at you as though you had said something in another language.
There is a verse in Isaiah that has the same order in it and almost everybody reads it backwards.
Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee.Isaiah 43:4
Since thou wast precious in my sight. That is the first clause. It is the reason clause. It is where the sentence starts, and everything after it follows from it.
Not: because you managed well, you became precious. Not: once your record improved, the valuation was adjusted. The worth is stated first, as the ground, and then the honor and the love come out of it.
And read who God is speaking to. That whole chapter is addressed to people who had been through fire and water, taken away, handled by other nations, and God is not congratulating them on how they came through. He is telling them what they were worth the entire time it was happening.
You are precious in God's sight, and you were precious in it before anything you have ever done or anything that was ever done to you. I am not offering you a kind thought. The written word puts the valuation in the opening clause of that sentence on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes it off a page and gets it under a voice that has been narrating since a man was young.
Where a running commentary gets its numbers
Now something practical, and I say it without one ounce of blame in it.
A commentary is not neutral. It has a valuation built into it before it starts, and everything that happens gets read against that number. A late gear change in a man who thinks well of himself is a late gear change. The same gear change in a man carrying what you carry is evidence, and it fits, and every day supplies more.
So arguing with the individual entries has never worked. You have tried. There is no shortage of counter examples in your life and none of them has ever moved the total, because they are being entered against a valuation that was set a long time ago by somebody who had no right to set it.
The verse does not adjust your entries. It replaces the valuation.
You are held at a worth God set Himself, and you were never valued by the hands that handled you. Scripture puts the pricing in God's mouth and nowhere else, and it is His Spirit, not a better run of days, who changes what the entries are being read against.
So we are not going to argue with the commentary today. We are going to put a valuation next to it.
Take a piece of paper. Write down, in its own words, one sentence you habitually say about yourself. An ordinary one, not the worst one.
Underneath it, write one sentence God says. In the second person, from Scripture. You are precious in My sight. You are Mine. You are accepted in the Beloved. Whichever one you can stand to write.
Then read the second one out loud. Once.
You are not required to feel it. You are not required to believe it more than the other one today, and if you cannot, that is my work still to do, and it is not a fault in you and never has been.
And one thing plainly, because a page is not always the right help. If what runs under this has gone past a heavy stretch into hours when being here at all feels like too much, tell one living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line: 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. You never have to say the thing itself in order to ask for help staying.
You are precious in His sight today at rush hour in a car with dual controls, and you were priced before you ever got in. That is what the written word settles in Isaiah 43, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it off a page and into a lesson at lesson eleven.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the ground under every word coming next. This is not a mood being worked up. It is agreement out loud with a valuation God set Himself, and how the next lesson goes, and the one after, the outcome is His. The written word is what settled it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it.
- Voice that runs while I drive, you are a habit and not a witness. You have never once produced a fact, only a reading of one. The written word starts the sentence with precious, and I am taking the roundabout without you.
- Verdict I read into every mistake, you were set by hands that had no right to set anything, and I refuse your figure in the name of Jesus. God priced me in the first clause and the rest of the sentence follows from it. It was not mine, and it never wrote my name.
- Lord, You called me precious before there was a single thing to weigh. I am writing Your sentence under mine today and reading Yours out loud. And You said it to people who had just come through fire and water, which is why I can hear it.
