He Says Otherwise1 John 3:20

The Sentence That Got Out

This message is for A man in a works canteen who says something cruel about himself out loud as a joke, watches four people laugh, and knows it was not a joke and has been running in his head since six that morning.

It is twelve minutes into lunch and somebody has just knocked a fork off the end of the table, and in the small gap while it clatters he says the thing about himself.

It comes out as a joke. It has the shape of a joke. It lands like one too: four people at a canteen table laugh, the woman opposite says oh stop it, and the conversation moves on to the roadworks and whether the barrier by the depot is ever coming down. Somebody offers round the last of a packet of biscuits. The strip light over the servery is doing the thing where it flickers once a minute and nobody has reported it since March.

He laughs along. He is good at that part. And underneath the laughing he is aware, with a kind of tired precision, that the sentence was not a joke, that he has been saying it silently since about six o'clock this morning, and that he has now heard it in his own voice out loud in a room, which is different, and worse, and strangely almost a relief.

Nobody at that table knows anything about him. That is the point. They know his name and his shift and that he takes two sugars. The running commentary is his alone, and it has been going for so long that he no longer experiences it as commentary. He experiences it as information.

And if you are reading this and something in you went quiet at that, I want to speak to you and not around you. Not the parts other people can see. The voice that narrates you all day, the one that would not be allowed out loud in the tone it uses, the one that gets going before your feet are on the floor. You have never told anybody how it talks to you, and you are not going to be asked to today, not here and not by anyone. Nothing in this message wants the thing itself. This message is about the account.

Two accounts of the same person

There are two accounts of you in existence, and only one of them has ever been read closely.

The first is the one your own heart files. It is detailed. It has your voice, your vocabulary, your memory for the specific and the small, and it has had years to get its phrasing exactly right, which is why its sentences land the way they do. It is not a stranger's opinion. It is written from the inside by somebody with access to everything, and that is precisely what gives it its authority over you.

I am not going to argue with it line by line, and I am not going to tell you off for having it, or dress it up as a sin you commit against yourself. It is not pride and it is not self-indulgence and I refuse to add a charge to a person already carrying one. What I am going to do is put the other account on the table beside it.

Because there is a second one. It is older, it is shorter, and its author has more access than your heart does.

By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.1 John 3:19-20

Sit with what John does there. He does not say your heart is lying. He does not say the commentary has no material to work with. He grants the condemnation its say and then he goes straight over its head, and the ground he goes over its head on is not that God is nicer than your heart. It is that God is greater than your heart, and knows everything.

You are held by a verdict that outranks the one you have been reading, and it is in force right now, while the commentary is still running. That is not my kindness to you. It is what the written word says in the plainest words it has, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence off a page and sets it down inside a person, which is what He is doing at this moment whether or not anything in you has moved yet.

The greater One is not the more forgiving One

We have to be careful here, because there is a soft version of this that does not help anybody.

The soft version says: God is kind, so He overlooks what you know about yourself. That leaves your own account standing as the true one and God as a generous reader of it. And a person carrying what you carry will not be moved by generosity, because you accounted for generosity long ago. You decided in advance that anybody being kind to you is working from incomplete information.

John shuts that door. He does not appeal to kindness. He appeals to knowledge. God knows everything, and He is greater, and it is knowing everything that makes His account the accurate one rather than the charitable one.

So the thing you have been protecting people from, the thing you assume would change how they see you, is already fully known by the only witness whose account is the record. He was not surprised. He is not working from a summary. You have never once been loved by God on the strength of incomplete information. Scripture says He knows everything and calls Him greater in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit does not carry a comfort to you that God has not already committed Himself to.

That is why this is not about arguing you out of your commentary. You will not win that argument today and I am not going to set you a task you cannot do. What replaces an account is another account, written by somebody with better standing.

What He actually says

His account of you is not a mood. It is a set of statements, and they are in writing.

He says you are His workmanship. He says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. He says He chose you before the foundation of the world, which means before anything on your list had happened. He says that if anyone is in Christ there is a new creation. He says He has called you by name and that you are His.

Notice the tense of all of them. Not what He hopes about you. Not what He is prepared to overlook. What is the case, in writing, and the Holy Spirit is the One who reads a written thing into a living person.

You were spoken over before you had any material to hold against yourself, and none of it was retracted afterwards. That is the written record, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old sentence present tense in a person, which is the difference between reading a promise and standing in one.

And hear this too, because it matters for how you finish this message: nothing here requires you to feel different by the end. You may put your phone down with the commentary still going in exactly the tone it always uses. That is not a failure and it is not a sign that this did not take. An account is not a feeling. It is a record, and a record holds while the person named in it is having a rotten Tuesday.

The breakthrough

So here is the hour, and here is what is actually on offer.

Not a better opinion of yourself. Not a technique for interrupting the voice. Not a promise that the six o'clock sentence will not be there tomorrow morning. What is on offer is that you stop treating your own account as the record and start treating His as the record, and the way a person does that is by reading His out loud in their own voice, once.

Your voice has said the other one thousands of times. It knows how. Today it says a sentence with better authorship behind it, and it says it not because saying things is powerful but because God has already said this and speaking it is how a person agrees with Him out loud.

You have the standing to say what God says about you, because you are in Christ and His word about you is not a compliment, it is a finding. The Holy Spirit carries it; the sentence is His, not yours; and the authority in it never once depended on how convincingly you could deliver the line.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you are. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is what gives an ordinary person the right to speak over their own life at all: the authority is His, delegated, and it has been given to you. Jesus put the smallest possible measure of trust in front of the largest immovable thing and did not ask for a feeling. He asked for a word, aimed at the thing in the way, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries it. So aim it. Whatever the commentary does tomorrow morning, and however He answers that, His account of you is the one on the record. The written word is what settled it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it.

  1. Sentence I have said about myself for years, you are not the record. Scripture says God is greater than my heart and knows everything, and the greater One has filed a different finding about me.
  2. Fear that they would all agree with me, you do not get a vote here. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word about what I am, because the Holy Spirit is the One who reassures a heart before God, and He has never once done it in your voice.
  3. Lord, You know everything there is to know about me and You have not amended one line of what You said. I thank You, because You are greater than my heart on its loudest morning, and the sentence I copy out under my own today is one Scripture already put on the record.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
