The grace is eleven words long and it has not changed in four years. It goes over the same chipped blue bowl, in the same order, with the same small hand making a grab for the bread before the end of it, and the whole thing takes about six seconds. Say it every night for four years and it stops being a prayer and becomes a doorway you walk through on the way to the potatoes.
It is also the whole of it. All of it. The complete record.
Because anything longer than six seconds happens on your own, and on your own the kitchen goes quiet, and in the quiet the one thing comes up the hall and stands in the doorway looking at you. So the praying got shorter. Not on purpose, not in one decision, just a steady editing down over four years until it fitted inside the time it takes to pass a bowl. You have told yourself it is tiredness. Some of it is. Most of it is that you cannot pray about the one thing and it seems dishonest to pray about everything else, so mostly, now, you do not pray.
And here is the part that is hardest to say out loud, so I will say it for you. You have not decided God is done with you. You believe He is good. You would tell anybody else that He is good. You just cannot work out how to walk into a room with Him carrying something you are not going to hand over.
Nobody is standing at that door asking for a password
This one is for the reader carrying a thing nobody knows. Not a wrong you are refusing to confess. A thing, whatever it is, that you have never once been able to get across your tongue, and that you have quietly come to believe stands between you and any real nearness with God until you can.
So, first: you are near. Right now, at this table, with the thing exactly where it has always been. That is not encouragement I invented to warm you up; it is what is written, and the Spirit who moved on the writer is the one holding it steady over you as you read. The nearness was not built by your disclosure and it is not suspended by your silence.
Look at how prayer is actually described when Scripture gets honest about it. There is no picture anywhere of a person assembling a full account before God will take the meeting. What there is instead is a passage that assumes you cannot get there in words at all, and calls that ordinary.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.Romans 8:26
Read the middle of that again. We do not know what to pray for as we ought. Not some of us, not the ones who are struggling, not the failures at the back. Us. The standing assumption of the New Testament is that human beings are not able to bring their real condition into speech, and God's answer to that was not a form to fill in. His answer was to put His own Spirit inside the praying, to carry the part that never makes it to language.
Which means the sentence you cannot say has already been carried into the room. You have not been standing outside a locked door for four years, and you were inside at a table you were welcome at the whole time. You have been standing inside, at a table you were welcome at, believing you needed a password that Jesus took off the door with His own body. The word says the way in was opened, and the Spirit is the one who keeps bringing you to it, night after night, in six second installments you have been dismissing as nothing.
What the six seconds actually were
I want to change what you think you have been doing at that bowl.
You have counted four years of grace over dinner as the residue of a prayer life, the last bit left after the rest fell away. It is not residue. It is the thing itself. Eleven words said out loud to God every single evening, in front of witnesses, without fail, in a season when you could not manage another syllable, is not a small prayer life. It is a person who kept turning up, and nothing written anywhere in Scripture measures prayer by its length. The Spirit has been in those six seconds the whole time.
And nothing here is going to tell you that saying it would fix this, or that not saying it is you hiding. It is not hiding. Something being unspeakable is not the same as something being concealed, and God has never once treated the two as the same. He knows it already. Not the outline of it. All of it, in more detail than you carry, from before it happened, and He has not stepped back a single inch in four years. There is no version of tonight in which He learns something.
That is where the relief actually is. If He already knows, then naming it was never information He needed. It was a fee you invented and then could not pay, and He never issued the invoice. You are welcome at the table with it unspoken, and that welcome is what the word says rather than what I hope. You have been welcome the whole time, and the Spirit has been praying the part you cannot reach while you passed the bread.
And if what sits under all of this is heavier than a hard year, if there are hours when staying here at all feels like too much, please tell one real person today and let them stay near you. If it goes further than that, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number wherever you are, tonight. That is not a failure of faith. It is exactly how God has always sent help, through people who turn up.
So here is what happens next, and it is smaller than you are braced for. The word has already done the heavy part of it, and the Spirit is holding the rest.
You are not being asked to produce anything tonight. What God asks of you is the size of a thing you already have in your hand: one sentence, said out loud, on purpose, about anything at all. Jesus put the moving of a mountain inside something you could hold between two fingers, and He was precise about how it works. It gets spoken. Not rehearsed, not perfected, not made complete first. Spoken.
You have the standing to do that, and it was opened to you by Christ rather than earned by your fluency. It is not conditional on your fluency, and the word in front of you tonight is the same word the Spirit has used on every person who ever came to God with something they could not say. That is a lot of people. You are in ordinary company.
Say one true sentence to God tonight. Leave the thing exactly where it is.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud where nobody has to hear. The standing under these words is not something you built tonight: the way in was opened by Jesus and it is yours, and Scripture holds it open whether or not you feel it swing. The Spirit carries the part you cannot get to words, and what He does with the quiet afterwards is His, in His own way and His own timing. We say the true thing. He does the rest.
- Six seconds, you are not the size of what God hears and you never set the terms at this table. The Lord who knows a word before it is on my tongue has been listening the whole four years, and He is listening now.
- Rule I made up on my own, you are not God's rule and you have no standing at His door. Jesus never once made a person produce a sentence before He would have them near, and in His name I take you off the doorstep tonight.
- Lord, You have known every part of it since before I could talk, and You have not stepped back an inch. You are nearer than the words I cannot find, and I am praying tonight without producing a single one of them.
