Needles Going, Radio Low

One long table, six chairs down each side, and a radio on the windowsill turned down so far that it is really only there to stop the room being silent.

Everything on that table is somebody's. Blocks, half made, in piles. A rotary cutter that is not supposed to leave the mat and never stays on the mat. A biscuit tin of pins. Somebody's spectacles that have now been missing for two weeks and are almost certainly inside somebody's work.

They show each other things. That is most of what happens. Somebody holds a block up and everybody makes the noise, and then two of them argue mildly about whether the border should be darker, and the woman who made it does exactly what she was going to do anyway. It is a good room. Twelve years some of them have been coming.

She is three down on the far side, and she shows things too. She has shown a great deal over the years.

But there is a rule. It has never been written down and she has never told anybody it exists, and it is this: anything with the hard year in it does not come out of the bag. It goes home again. It gets finished at her own table, and it goes in the chest on the landing, and nobody has ever seen a single one of them.

She would tell you they are not her best work. That is not why.

Now. I want to be very careful, and I want to say who I am speaking to before I say anything else. Today I am speaking to the one whose weight belongs entirely to what another person did, a long way back.

And I am going to say the most important sentence in this message first. I am not going to ask you to tell anybody. Not today, not one day, not as the mature next step, and not to a spouse or a friend or a leader or a group. I will not ask you to describe anything to anyone, ever. Nothing here wants the thing itself, and a woman who never tells another living person is a whole woman and a whole reader of this site.

A promise stacked with negatives, and who it was written for

There is one sentence in Hebrews that everybody quotes and almost nobody counts.

I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.Hebrews 13:5

In the Greek that is not one negative. It is a stack of them, piled up the way a person piles them up when they are talking to somebody who is not going to believe it the first time. Never, and not ever, and by no means, and not at all. The writer takes an old promise God made to Joshua and hands it to ordinary people in a letter, and he lets all the negatives stand.

Why so many?

Because it was written for the exact kind of person who has a rule about what comes out of the bag. Somebody who has been left, or handled, or made small by another person's doing, and who has spent the years since arranging life so that no one is ever in a position to do it again.

That woman does not need a promise. She needs it four times, in one line, from Somebody who is not going to move.

You are held by a promise that God stacked up because once was never going to be enough for a person carrying what you carry, and you were the reason He said it that many times. I am not offering you sentiment. The written word repeats itself deliberately there, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it into a woman three down on the far side of a table.

Nothing in that promise depends on you saying anything

Here is what I want you to take home in the bag with the blocks.

Look at what that sentence asks of you. Read it again and find the condition.

There is not one. There is no if. There is no telling, no disclosure, no readiness, no forgiving on a schedule, no proving that you have processed anything. It is a statement about what God does, and the only person with an obligation in it is Him.

Everything else people have laid on you may or may not have been well meant. None of it was in this verse.

You are kept by God with no condition attached and no account required, and you were never going to be asked to earn a staying. Scripture puts the whole weight of that promise on His side of it, and it is His Spirit, not anything you produce, who makes a promise like that carry.
