Seven of them and six chairs, so somebody is always on the arm of the sofa, and tonight it is the retired teacher, who has read the whole book twice and has notes.
Nobody else has finished it. This is established within four minutes and it happens every month, and the ritual of admitting it is genuinely most of the enjoyment. There is a plate of biscuits with the good ones already gone from one side. There is a dog who is not supposed to be in here. There is a woman who keeps saying she liked the ending without having reached it, which everybody has noticed and nobody is going to say.
She is on the end of the sofa nearest the hall.
She has sat there for four years. Not by arrangement. It simply happened once and then it kept happening, and now it is her seat, and the reason it is her seat is that it is eleven feet from the front door and there is a clear run to it past the radiator.
She loves these evenings. That is the thing that makes this hard to explain to anybody. She reads the book. She has strong opinions about the book. She is funny in that room, actually funny, the kind of funny that makes a person's evening.
And at some point every month, usually about an hour in, when the talk has stopped being about the book and started being about people's lives, something in her chest changes gear, and she starts calculating how soon she can go without it looking like anything, and she goes, and she is always the first, and everybody says lovely to see you.
Because there is one thing about her that nobody in that room knows.
Sit down here with me a minute, and let me say the most important sentence in this message first, so you can read the rest of it with your shoulders down. I am not going to ask you to tell anybody. Not tonight, not eventually, not as a braver version of yourself later on. I am not going to guess what it is. I am not going to offer you a list. Nothing here wants the thing itself, and a person who never tells another human being for the rest of their life is a whole person and a whole reader of this site.
The verse people dread is the one that lets you sit down
There is a psalm most people know the first line of, and most people know it as a slightly alarming line.
O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.Psalm 139:1
Searched. Known. It sounds like a torch in a dark room, and if you are carrying something unspoken, that is exactly what it sounds like.
Now look at the tense, because the tense is the mercy.
Hast searched. It is done. Not is searching, not will search, not may one day look into it. Completed, past, finished. There is no examination pending. Whatever the searching was going to find, it has already found, and it found it a long time before you sat down on that sofa.
And look at what happens next in that psalm. He does not withdraw. He does not become cooler. The whole rest of it is the writer discovering that there is nowhere he can go where God is not already waiting for him warmly, and by the end he is asking God to search him again, which is not something a man does to somebody who flinched the first time.
You are already fully known and God has not moved, and you were searched and kept in the same breath. I am not offering you a comforting reading there. The written word puts the searching in the past tense and the keeping in the present, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the tidiness of my paragraph, who takes that off a page and into a chest that changes gear an hour into an evening.
Being known and being found out are two different things
Here is the distinction the whole category turns on, and once you have it you will not lose it.
Being found out is what happens when information moves from you to people who did not have it, without your choosing, and it changes what they think. That is a real fear and I am not going to talk you out of it.
Being known is what God has already done, completely, with everything in view, and it changed nothing about how He is toward you.
Those two have been fused in you, probably for years, so that God's knowing feels like the same species of thing as the room's not knowing. It is not. One of them is a threat and the other is the safest fact in your life.
You are held by a God who had all of it in view before you ever walked into that room, and you were never one sentence away from losing Him. Scripture says nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ, and it is His Spirit who makes an unlosable thing feel unlosable in a body that has been braced for years.
So here is the thing, and it costs you no words at all.
Stay in one room today that you would normally leave early.
Not forever. Not to prove anything, and not so that something can come out. Stay ten minutes past the moment you would ordinarily start calculating, and then go if you want to, and say nothing about any of it to anybody.
That is the whole thing. There is no second step where you tell somebody. There is no braver version of this next month.
And I will say one thing plainly, because a page is not always the help a person needs. If what you are carrying has gone past a heavy stretch into hours when being here at all feels like too much, tell one living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line: 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. You can ask for help staying without ever telling anybody the thing itself, and reaching for a person is not a step backward from anything God is doing.
You are safe in that front room tonight, and you were safe in it on every one of the four years you spent eleven feet from the door. That is what the written word settles in Psalm 139, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it off a page and onto the end of a sofa.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the ground under every word coming next. This is not a feeling being worked up. It is agreement out loud with something God finished a long time ago, and how tonight goes, and how next month goes, the outcome is His. The written word is what settled it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it.
- Front room with the biscuits out, you are eleven feet of carpet and a sofa. You were never a place I had to survive and there is no hearing scheduled in you. The written word says I am searched and known already, and I am staying for the second cup.
- Fear of the question I cannot answer, you are guarding a door nobody is coming through, and I refuse your claim in the name of Jesus. Being known by God is not the same thing as being found out by a room. There is nothing pending, because the searching is finished.
- Lord, You searched me and knew me and You did not move an inch. I am sitting back in that room tonight with nothing to say. And You had the whole of it in view long before I ever chose that seat.
